Summary
Stéphane Ruiz, newly transferred from Cherbourg, joins the anti-crime brigade in Montfermeil, the eastern Paris suburb where Victor Hugo set part of his novel. Riding with the swaggering Chris and the locally raised Gwada, he learns how the estate is actually policed: through informal accommodations with the self-appointed 'Mayor', a Muslim Brotherhood leader and a Roma circus family. The theft of a lion cub from the circus sends the three officers looking for the boy who took it, and the arrest goes wrong in a way that a child's drone happens to record. Ladj Ly's first feature won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was France's entry for the Academy Awards.
