Summary
In the pocket kingdom of Marshovia, the widowed Madame Sonia holds most of the nation's wealth, so her decision to leave for Paris threatens the treasury with collapse. The king orders Captain Danilo, a royal guard officer with a reputation with women, to follow her and bring her and her fortune home. At Maxim's, Sonia lets Danilo take her for one of the club's dancing girls, and their affair is well along before either understands who the other is. Ernst Lubitsch directed this MGM musical adaptation of Franz Lehar's operetta, pairing Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald and setting the waltzes to new English lyrics.
