Summary
Moustapha Akkad's historical war epic dramatises Italy's campaign to pacify its Libyan colony between 1929 and 1931. Anthony Quinn plays Omar Mukhtar, an elderly Quran teacher who commands the Senussi rebels of Cyrenaica, leading mounted guerrillas in ambushes against a colonial army equipped with tanks, artillery and aircraft. Oliver Reed's General Rodolfo Graziani arrives with Mussolini's mandate to end a twenty-year insurgency, and answers the raids with barbed wire strung along the Egyptian frontier, mass internment of Bedouin civilians and public executions. The film cuts between desert combat and the Italian command's political calculations, with Rod Steiger as Mussolini.
