Summary
In a village in the Languedoc foothills in the 1540s, the young peasant Martin Guerre abandons his wife Bertrande de Rols and his family's land and disappears for years. A man eventually returns claiming to be him; he is changed, but Bertrande accepts him and the village takes him back — until a quarrel with Martin's uncle Pierre over the family property hardens into an accusation of imposture and the case reaches the parlement of Toulouse. Gérard Depardieu plays the returned man and Nathalie Baye plays Bertrande, whose own understanding of who he is becomes the film's central question. Daniel Vigne's historical drama reconstructs an actual sixteenth-century French trial, with historian Natalie Zemon Davis as consultant.
