Summary
On Thanksgiving Day 1976, The Band played a farewell concert at Bill Graham's Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, sixteen years after the group first went on the road. Martin Scorsese shot the show with a team of cinematographers on a stage dressed with sets borrowed from the San Francisco Opera, capturing guest appearances by Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris and Eric Clapton. Between performances, Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel talk with Scorsese about life on the road, and additional numbers are staged on an MGM soundstage. The result is a concert documentary about a working band deciding to stop.
