Summary
A disillusioned American Civil War veteran is hired to train Japan's first modern conscript army to suppress a samurai rebellion during the Meiji Restoration. After being captured in battle, he is taken to the samurai village, where he comes to understand and embrace their code of honor and finds himself torn between the empire that hired him and the warriors resisting Japan's rapid Westernization.
