Summary
In 1893 colonial India, the villagers of Champaner are crushed by a doubled land tax (lagaan) imposed by an arrogant British officer. A defiant young farmer named Bhuvan accepts the officer's wager: assemble a village team and beat the British garrison at cricket, a game they have never played, to win three years' tax relief, or pay double if they lose.
