Summary
Ken Burns's nine-part PBS documentary series narrates the American Civil War from secession and Fort Sumter in 1861 to Appomattox, and on into the memory the survivors carried afterward. It works almost entirely from still material, some sixteen thousand archival photographs, paintings, maps and newspaper pages, slowly panned and held, with David McCullough narrating and actors including Sam Waterston, Julie Harris, Jason Robards and Morgan Freeman reading letters, diaries and dispatches. Soldiers, politicians and enslaved people are heard in their own words alongside on-camera historians, chief among them Shelby Foote. The series keeps slavery at the center of its account of why the war was fought and what it cost.
