Summary
Martha Costello is a criminal defence barrister at a London chambers applying to take silk, the appointment to Queen's Counsel, in the same round as Clive Reader, the smoother and better-connected colleague across the corridor. Episodes follow her cases at the Old Bailey, usually defending people whose innocence she cannot be sure of, alongside the chambers politics run by senior clerk Billy Lamb, who quietly decides which briefs go to which barrister. Created for BBC One by Peter Moffat, himself a former barrister, the legal drama ran three series between 2011 and 2014, with Maxine Peake as Martha, Rupert Penry-Jones as Clive and Neil Stuke as Billy.
