Summary
President Jordan Lyman has signed a nuclear disarmament treaty with the Soviet Union and watched his approval collapse; the sharpest opposition comes from General James Mattoon Scott, the popular chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Colonel 'Jiggs' Casey, director of the Joint Staff and Scott's own subordinate, stumbles on a secret betting pool among the chiefs, an unlisted base in the Texas desert and an imminent nationwide alert exercise, and concludes that the military means to seize the government. With no proof, Casey takes the suspicion to the White House, where a few of the President's men have days to test it. John Frankenheimer directed this black-and-white Cold War thriller, scripted by Rod Serling from the Knebel and Bailey novel.
