Summary
Ingmar Bergman's six-part Swedish television drama traces the collapse of a marriage over roughly ten years. Marianne (Liv Ullmann) is a divorce lawyer and Johan (Erland Josephson) an associate professor at a psychotechnical institute; the opening episode has them interviewed by a magazine as a model modern couple, comfortable and articulate about their own contentment. When Johan announces that he has fallen in love with a younger woman named Paula and is leaving, the two are pulled into years of separations, returns, legal negotiation and confession.
