Summary
In a strict religious community on the Scottish coast, naive newlywed Bess McNeill is devastated when her oil-rig worker husband Jan is paralyzed in an accident. From his hospital bed, Jan asks her to take other lovers and tell him about it, believing it will keep him alive. Bess, convinced she is acting on God's will, embarks on increasingly dangerous sexual encounters that put her at odds with her church and community.
