Summary
Philip Winter, a German journalist sent across the United States to write about the American landscape, comes back with a pile of Polaroids and no article. Stranded in New York by an airline strike, he agrees to help a fellow German, Lisa, and her nine-year-old daughter Alice get to Europe — and then Lisa fails to appear, leaving the child in his charge. The two fly to Amsterdam and drive through the towns of the Ruhr hunting for the grandmother's house, with only a snapshot of it to go on. Wim Wenders shot this black-and-white road movie, the first of his loose road trilogy, around the wary and improvised bond between the pair.
