Summary
Created, hosted and largely written by Rod Serling, this CBS anthology ran from 1959 to 1964, with each self-contained episode framed by Serling's on-camera narration. Ordinary Americans — a bank teller who wants only to be left alone with his books, an aging boxer, a suburban street that turns on itself during a blackout — are dropped into situations governed by science fiction, fantasy or the supernatural, and are usually met with a final reversal. Serling and writers including Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont used those genre frames to address nuclear fear, conformity, prejudice and mortality at a time when direct treatment drew sponsor and network objections. Most episodes run half an hour; the fourth season expanded to an hour.
