Summary
Joe Pesci plays Leon 'Bernzy' Bernstein, who works New York in 1942 with a police radio in his car and a darkroom in the trunk, selling crime-scene pictures to the tabloids and hoping to see them published as a book. Barbara Hershey's Kay Levitz, who inherited a Manhattan nightclub from her mobster husband, seeks him out because men are squeezing her for a share of the place, and the pressure runs back to wartime gasoline rationing and the coupons that make it worth killing over. Bernzy, who has always kept himself outside the stories he shoots, starts working the angles of this one. Howard Franklin wrote and directed; the photographer is modelled on Weegee.
