Summary
Jeff Stein's documentary assembles more than a decade of footage of the Who — Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle and Keith Moon — from mid-1960s television slots on both sides of the Atlantic through the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus, Monterey and Woodstock. There is no narrator and no historian; the film cuts straight between archive performances, often hostile interview clips, and concerts staged specially in 1977 and 1978 at Kilburn's Gaumont State and Shepperton Studios. Running through it are the smashed instruments, Moon's stunts and Townshend's commentary on his own band. The Shepperton show gave Moon his last filmed performance; he died in 1978, before release.
