Chicago family man Chet Ripley takes his wife and sons on a peaceful lakeside vacation in Wisconsin, only to have his trip hijacked by the unexpected arrival of his brash, status-obsessed brother-in-law Roman and his family. What follows is a week of escalating rivalry, slapstick mishaps with bears and bats, and long-buried family tensions boiling over in the north woods.
