Summary
The British series began in 1961 with Dr David Keel (Ian Hendry), a London physician whose fiancee is killed by a drug syndicate, joining the unflappable government agent John Steed (Patrick Macnee) to avenge her, which is where the title comes from. After Hendry's departure Steed took the lead, working with a run of formidable female partners: the anthropologist Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), then Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) and Tara King (Linda Thorson), with a wheelchair-bound spymaster called Mother appearing in the later years. Cases involve mad scientists, the killer-robot Cybernauts and eccentric villains in a depopulated, stylised England of country lanes and stately homes, played with bowler hat, umbrella and dry banter.
