Summary
Akira Kurosawa's late epic transposes King Lear to Japan's Sengoku era, where the ageing warlord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai) announces that he will step down and divide his territories among his three sons, keeping only his title and an escort. Saburo, the youngest, tells him the plan will destroy the family and is banished for the insult; Taro and Jiro take their castles and then begin stripping their father of what little he kept. Pressing the collapse forward is Lady Kaede (Mieko Harada), Taro's wife, whose own family Hidetora wiped out to build the domain. A historical war drama staged with colour-coded armies, vast troop movements and near-silent battle sequences.
