Summary
Peter Flannery's nine-part BBC serial follows four friends from Newcastle upon Tyne — Nicky, Mary, Geordie and Tosker — over thirty years, each episode set in a single year between 1964 and 1995. Nicky comes home from the American civil rights movement to work for a Labour council leader whose slum-clearance housing drive is entangled with a corrupt builder, while Geordie drifts south into Soho's vice trade. Mary marries Tosker and is pulled into local politics as that marriage sours. Their private choices keep colliding with the public history around them: police corruption, the miners' strike, Thatcherism and the long wait for a Labour government.
