Kevin Macdonald's documentary reconstructs 5 September 1972, when eight Black September gunmen entered the Israeli team's quarters at the Munich Olympics, killed two members of the delegation and held nine athletes and coaches hostage while events continued elsewhere in the village. Built from news footage, police material and interviews - among them Ankie Spitzer, widow of the fencing coach Andre Spitzer, and Jamal Al-Gashey, the last known surviving gunman - it tracks the negotiations hour by hour and on to the improvised rescue attempt at Furstenfeldbruck airfield. Much of its attention falls on West German unpreparedness: no counter-terrorist unit, snipers without radios, officials reluctant to stop the Games. Michael Douglas narrates.
