Summary
The BBC's four-part adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1855 novel. Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe) is uprooted from a Hampshire parsonage when her father leaves the Church, and the family resettles in Milton, a smoky cotton-milling city in the industrial north. She takes an instant dislike to the mill owner John Thornton (Richard Armitage), whom she first sees beating a worker, and befriends the union organiser Nicholas Higgins and his ailing daughter Bessy. As the hands go on strike against the masters, Margaret's sympathies and her reading of Thornton are both tested. A Victorian period drama of class, industry and mutual misjudgement.
