Summary
Dieter Dengler grew up in a Black Forest village during the Second World War, watched an Allied fighter strafe his street at eye level, and decided he had to fly; he emigrated to America and worked his way up to flying off a US Navy carrier. On his first mission over Laos in 1966 he was shot down, captured by Pathet Lao troops and held in a jungle camp with a handful of other prisoners on starvation rations. Werner Herzog takes him back to Laos and Thailand thirty years later to walk the ground and stage fragments of the ordeal, hiring local villagers to play his captors. Dengler narrates the documentary himself, and Herzog lingers on what the experience left behind: food hoarded under the floorboards, doors that must be opened and closed.
