Summary
In 19th-century France, ex-convict Jean Valjean breaks parole, reinvents himself as a respected factory owner and mayor, and takes in the orphaned daughter of a destitute worker. He is relentlessly pursued across the years by Inspector Javert, a rigid lawman who cannot accept that a former prisoner can truly change, as Valjean's quiet life is drawn into the unrest of revolutionary Paris.
