Summary
A disillusioned Mexican-American War veteran abandons civilization to become a mountain man in the 1840s Rocky Mountains, learning to survive the harsh wilderness with help from a grizzled trapper and a mute boy. He builds a fragile life with a Flathead wife, but a fateful crossing of sacred Crow burial ground draws him into a long, solitary conflict with the tribe.
