Summary
D.W. Griffith's epic interweaves four parallel stories across history to illustrate humankind's recurring cruelty: a modern American tale of labor strife and a wrongly condemned young man, the Judean story of Christ, the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in 16th-century France, and the fall of ancient Babylon to Cyrus. The narratives are intercut and unified by a recurring image of a mother rocking a cradle, symbolizing the endless cycle of intolerance.
