Summary
In a parallel present-day Britain where humanoid robot servants called Synths have become commonplace, a suburban family purchases a Synth named Anita to help around the house. Unbeknownst to them, she is one of a small group of Synths secretly imbued with consciousness, and her arrival draws the family into a growing conflict over what it means to be human as other sentient Synths struggle to find each other and survive.
