Summary
During the Civil War, disillusioned Confederate medic Newton Knight deserts and returns to Jones County, Mississippi, where he leads a growing band of poor farmers and escaped slaves in armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Together they declare the region a free state and continue fighting for equality and land rights well into the Reconstruction era.
