Summary
Huo Yuanjia, the real-life wushu master, is introduced as the arrogant reigning champion of Tianjin in the closing years of the Qing dynasty, accumulating victories for his reputation without weighing the cost. A duel fought in anger brings catastrophe down on his household and drives him out of the city; he spends years in a remote farming village, taken in by a blind young woman and her grandmother. He returns to Shanghai to face a succession of foreign champions in publicly staged bouts, at a moment when China's strength is being openly questioned by the treaty powers.
