Summary
Gregory Nava's three-part drama opens in the Guatemalan highlands, where Enrique and Rosa Xuncax, a Maya brother and sister, lose their father to army violence during a crackdown on peasant organising. Fearing they are next, the pair set out for el norte, crossing Mexico by bus and freight and paying a coyote to bring them into California, a passage that includes a long crawl through an abandoned border drainage tunnel. In Los Angeles they take work as undocumented labourers, Rosa in domestic service and Enrique as a restaurant busboy, chasing the comfortable American life they had assembled in their heads from magazines. Dialogue moves between Spanish and K'iche', and the siblings' picture of the north keeps colliding with what it offers.
