Summary
After his Tokyo orchestra disbands, cellist Daigo Kobayashi returns to his rural hometown with his wife and stumbles into a job as a nokanshi, a traditional Japanese mortician who ceremonially prepares the deceased for burial. As he learns the craft under a quietly wise mentor, Daigo confronts social stigma, his wife's disapproval, and unresolved grief over the father who abandoned him as a child.
