Summary
In 1876 the mining camp of Deadwood sits on Sioux land in the Black Hills, outside any state or federal jurisdiction, which is exactly why its residents are there. Seth Bullock, a former Montana marshal, arrives with his partner Sol Star to open a hardware store and stop being a lawman, while Al Swearengen runs the Gem Saloon and, through bribery, blackmail and murder, most of the camp's business. The series follows their collisions and alliances as the settlement acquires a bank, a newspaper, a telegraph line and eventually the attention of outside capital that wants the gold. David Milch created this HBO western, whose cast of historical figures includes Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Charlie Utter.
