Summary
Born in Suffolk after his father's death, David Copperfield loses the run of his childhood when his mother marries the cold Edward Murdstone, who beats him, ships him to Salem House school and, once his mother is gone, sets him to washing bottles in a London warehouse. Lodging with the cheerfully insolvent Mr Micawber, David eventually walks to Dover to throw himself on his great-aunt Betsey Trotwood, who has never forgiven him for not being born a girl. Growing up, he must take the measure of the fawning clerk Uriah Heep, his glamorous schoolfriend Steerforth and the Peggottys of Yarmouth. The BBC's two-part Dickens adaptation cast Daniel Radcliffe as the young David and Ciaran McMenamin as the adult, with Maggie Smith, Bob Hoskins and Nicholas Lyndhurst.
