Summary
Hae-won, a hardened Seoul bank clerk pushed onto leave after refusing to identify the men who attacked a woman in front of her, retreats to Mudo, the tiny island where she spent childhood summers. There she finds her old friend Kim Bok-nam living as the community's workhorse: farming and gutting fish all day, beaten and passed around by her husband and his brother, harangued by the island's elderly women, with her young daughter Yeon-hee her only reason to stay. Bok-nam's letters have long begged Hae-won to help her reach the mainland, and Hae-won keeps her distance. Jang Cheol-soo's Korean thriller spends its first half on the mechanics of that isolation before turning into a revenge film.
