Summary
In late 19th-century Imperial Russia, the aristocratic Anna Karenina, wife of a senior government official, embarks on a passionate affair with the dashing cavalry officer Count Vronsky. As their romance defies the rigid moral codes of St. Petersburg society, Anna risks her marriage, her son, and her standing, while a parallel storyline follows the earnest landowner Levin's pursuit of love and meaning. Joe Wright stages the story within a theatrical conceit.
