Arthur Shelby's debts force him to sell two of the people he holds in slavery on his Kentucky farm: Tom, a middle-aged man trusted with running the place, and Harry, the small son of the housemaid Eliza. The novel splits there. Eliza runs with her boy, crossing the ice-choked Ohio on foot and heading north through Quaker households with slave catchers behind her; Tom is sold down the Mississippi, first into a comfortable New Orleans household and then onto a Red River cotton plantation under Simon Legree. Stowe wrote against the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, and her case is Christian and domestic: slavery breaks families and corrupts owners, traders and bystanders alike. Its sentimental machinery — dying children, conversions, direct appeals to the reader — was aimed at white Northern women who had never seen a plantation.
Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) came from the Beecher family of New England preachers and reformers; she followed this novel with A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin, a documentary defence of its accuracy, and with a second antislavery novel, Dred.
